Included in the branding elements are dashed red lines, because of the perception of dashed red lines as talking about where you’re going, boundaries (and the place where things come together), as gerrymandering in Oklahoma People Not Politicians is a group initiative in Oklahoma&nbsp;led by Let's Fix This, the League of Women Voters of Oklahoma, and a broad coalition of concerned citizens who believe in a better democracy, starting with tackling the redistricting process. Currently, legislators get to draw their own districts, essentially picking their own voters so they can stay in office, which results in political gerrymandering. initiative petition as people in power protect their ability to hold on and continue to draw districts for their own gain. Our first challenges were around the gist, the summary of the petition on the signature page. The Oklahoma Supreme Court heard the challenges to the petition in Febuary of 2020. They ruled that the gist needed to be rewritten, so the petition was re-filed and re-submitted soon after the ruling. Supporters showed up in 20 degree weather to demand fair districts and fair representation. With the newly-filed petition, the Court ruled to let us start collecting signatures during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Secretary of State put a stay on collection. Margaret grew up an artist, went to college for sculpture, became a teacher, and fell in love with weaving. She has since shown her work at places like the Museum of Art and Design in NYC, the Peabody, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum. She has become a historian of her family and heritage, and named her company after her great great great grandmother, Mahota. I was honored to lead this project, starting with research and getting to know Margaret and ending with the presentation and implementation of the brand I created, as well as a history I wrote. ︎&nbsp;Circles represent life, light, growth, and eternity in Chickasaw culture, and were used in designs on everything. I used circles to show the generations that went into creating this brand, from Mahota to Margaret. When Margaret hands on the company, a new circle will be added and the legacy of Mahota will continue to grow. Margaret’s mother and grandmother, avid at embroidery and crochet, placed a needle in Margaret’s hands. These women taught Margaret handiwork and her heritage as a Native American woman. A few years later, when Margaret was in elementary school, she witnessed others making art. She saw the large-scale paintings done by the Works Progress Administration in her town. She didn’t like the small scale of embroidery or jewelry making. She showed talent for painting and sculpture, but those methods were too still for her. Margaret finally found her passion in weaving textiles, in the movement and fold of fabric. Weaving allowed Margaret to create art that could take on action and movement through the air. When she began combining weaving with the exploration of her heritage, she came across a photo of two boys wearing Chickasaw hunting coats. This photograph inspired Margaret to create her first award-winning clothing design. Margaret had found a way to make art that excited her and honored her tribal heritage. Mahota makes Southeastern Native American design the priority while displaying the sacred cultural identity, unique cultures, rich history, beauty and symbolism of an ethnic group. Mahota motifs are embedded with spirit and connection to homelands of the Southeastern region through sun symbols, spirals, circles, the forked eye, the hand-eye and more. It’s a mix of journalism and editorializing with heavy snark that comes from personal proximity to these issues—Marty’s wife is JoBeth Hamon, OKC Councilor for Ward 6. Because of his connections, Peercy is able to offer extra insight into history and relationships between those involved. Residents of OKC consistently look to OKC-SPAN to know what’s happening in their local government, making it an invaluable resource. They are doing the massively important work of tracking and lobbying for good legislation while trying to not lose ground with bad legislation. In Oklahoma, that’s a full time job and a half. The OCRJ is made up of incredible volunteers who dedicate so much time and energy to making Oklahoma a better place, and they have had a direct impact on the kinds of legislation Oklahoma passes. When we started work with OCRJ, they were named “The Oklahoma Coalition for Reproductive Justice.” They knew this was a mouthful, but they didn’t know the extent to which this was alienating people. We conducted a study (across many demographics and regions) over the effectiveness of a their name. We determined that it had to change, but this was a challenge because they had developed equity with the acronym, OCRJ. Additionally, they didn’t want to give up their domain name ocrj.org. We evaluated names that maintain the acronym and the web address, but more accurately reflect who they are. Our biggest concern was that they were not a coalition at all, but rather a grassroots group of organizers and individuals. After six months of studies, workshops, tears, and different name explorations, we finally landed on the name The Oklahoma Call for Reproductive Justice. This reflects the “Call” in their new name, symbolizing that they don’t just oppose bad bills, they call for better things and support good bills. This was one of the main goals they had—they wanted to be seen as for things, not just a reactionary group. We created a color system for them that uses three variants of three colors (9 colors total), and selected Korolev and Korolev Military Stencil for the brand fonts, inspired by hand-made vintage activist signs. Because of the nature of their brand fonts, we were able to make actual stencils for them to use when they make their own signs. This translates into a lot of money saved for their organization, and a fun way to get people involved in protests. <img width="6720" height="4480" width_o="6720" height_o="4480"
